Bleeding in early pregnancy the NICE Guideline

‘National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is an independent organisation responsible for national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health.’

The Department of Health has formally requested the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence to produce a clinical guideline on the assessment and initial management, both physical and emotional, of pain and bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy.

The EPT welcomes this development and the priority and commitment that the Dept of Health has made to this condition.  The guideline will help to raise standards of care and establish consistency on a national basis, and so reduce the trauma for those experiencing early pregnancy loss.

Helen Wilkinson, Director of the EPT, has been co-opted onto the Guideline Development Group as a lay representative.  This is a group of ten people, including health professionals working in the defined area.  The EPT welcomes the opportunity for the patient perspective to be included within the guideline.
