Ovulation pain after ectopic

Post by lisa8712 »

Can anybody tell me if they have pain during ovulation after having an ectopic?

We discovered at 7 weeks pregnant that we had an ectopic pregnancy, or pregnancy of unknown location. On 30th March i had the methotrexate shot and on the 18th May i was finally discharged after my hcg levels had dropped under 10. I have had three regular cycles since then so was not worried about them however, i have noticed that my period pains are worse than they have ever been, and i also know when i am ovulating now as i get pain, but the pain is in the same place it was during my pregnancy and going through the motions after the methotrexate. The pain is one sided (my left side) and i am guessing this is where the etopic was as during the transvaginal scans when she turned the probe to the left side i would nearly soot off the bed, and the sonographer said the ovary on the left side wasnt so easy to see it was blurred. I've read that ovulation pain is not normal and its making me worried as we will soon be ready to try again. Has anyone else experienced this, am i being paranoid or is it worth a trip to the docs?

Hope that makes sense, any advice would be apprecaited.
Thanks

Hi there, I'm sorry you're going through this too. I had methotrexate on 5th June and just about to have my 3rd period after. I now have ovulation pains, something I never experienced before. It is normal, I believe, and many women report similar in my experience. The EPT discuss this on their advice section (see link) http://www.ectopic.org.uk/patients/your ... pregnancy/

Also my periods are definitely different. Shorter cycle length different pains and awful pms -- my poor husband!

Thanks. I think becasue all the pains are in the exact same place where they were during the pregnancy i find it a bit strange.
I see now that reading on here that this can be common after ectopic. I was reading medical and gynaelogical journals that says it is not normal to feel ovulation or have pain, but I supopse this is under normal circumstances?

How are you feeling after the loss. will you be ttc again soon? Im uncertain as to when to start again, i think im just scared of it happening again. This was my second pregnancy, I miscarried on my first.

Oh I'm afraid to say we have very similar stories. I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks in Feb (our first pregnancy) then the ectopic in June. Awful times all round. I hope it's 3rd time lucky for both of us.

I know what you mean about the ovulation pains. Having never had anything like it before I've found it really strange and like a monthly reminder of what happened.

I'm pretty good at the moment, although I had a wobble yesterday. Just waiting for my 3rd AF so we can start trying again in September. I'm scared of it happening again -- I'm not sure how I'd cope -- but I know logically that if we want a child the only way is to try. Easier said than done though, I know!

Third time lucky, (so to speak) my thoughts exactly. I'm pretty sure everything will be just fine next time around.. it's just the thought.

I have been very confused about when to try again. The consultant told me that I had to wait 6 months after the methotrexate shot and everyone I see posting on here is 3 months?? Also, i was never told about having to take folic acid 12 weeks before ttc again.. i've only learnt that from what i've read on here. My 6 months meant that we could start trying again beginning of October, but if i start taking folic acid now i'm waiting an extra 3 months.

Although I am scared and anxious about it happening again, deep down i cant wait to start again.. it will have been 9 months waiting in total! Were you told 3 months too?

Hi there.
Yeah the hospital told me 3 months in line with EPT guidance, though they did mention that some medics were still advocating the old advice of 6 months. It's annoying how little we're told about what to do. I took most of my advice from this website. So 6 weeks after the mthx shot I went to my gp for a liver function test. Today (12 weeks since the shot) I went for a folate level test, just to make sure the folic acid I've taken has built up. But all of this has been off my own back, I wasn't offered anything once the hospital discharged me when my hcg levels fell.
Having said all that there is folic acid in food, especially things like breakfast cereal, green veg, and marmite. So it's quite possible you've built up some stores in your system just through diet.
Could you go to your gp and get your levels checked? You're right it's a long time to wait but on the positive side your body's had a good rest.

I'm mostly excited to try again now but I do get scared every now and again when I think about what could go wrong this time. But hopefully not. Either way it's already felt like a long difficult journey.

Let me know how you get on. I hope you get some clarity in the advice you've been given.

Hey, first of all I want to say im very sorry for all ur losses. Its comforting to have others to talk to on here n read about their experiences so u know ur not alone. .. but its a hard thing to get over.n I don't think u can put a time limit on grief.

I too had a miscarriage in October 2014 at 11 wks preg and then 5 months later I had a Ectopic preg ir P U L pregnancy unknown location in March this yr.

I didnt have surgery or shots but had expectant management.

I got my first period I think 3 wks later after I had bled for 10 days during the preg loss. Then I think iv had in total 6 periods since it happened. .. the first few months I def knew wen I was ovulating coz I had a lot of pain on my right side where I think the ectopic preg was if it was one... n my periods last a bit.longer n they are def more painful.

I still can tell when im ovulating but I think after 4 periods since the preg loss the ovulation pain eases up. Coz wen I was ovulating before my 5 th n 6th period I did feel ovulation pain but it wasn't bad at all.

So I do think after a few periods since the ep ur ovulation pain eases up n also my 5th period was pain free. . But then my 6 th period was 5 days late n very painful. (Where as the other periods since were jus one day late from my usual cycle due day)

So I do think ur periods can get messed up as in longer or shorter n more or less painful n u can even b unusually late even if u use to b on time every month.

So don't stress... it jus takes a while for ur body to go bak to normal n ur more aware of any pains.

If u are concerned go see ur doctor.

I have only recently found out about taking folic acid before ur even preg.

I am toi hoping it will be 3rd time lucky... as planned my last two pregs.n really want things to go well wen im lucky to fall preg again.

I wish u all well in ur future healthy pregs which im sure will happen. . U have to try to believe it and pray for it to happen. Is what im doing and in meantime as long as it takes ur body us having more time to heal.

Take care

I forgot to say my ectopic or PUL preg was when I was 7 wks preg. .. I really think that's a common length in oreg for it to happen if it's going to...

The hospital told me next time I get preg I should let the hospital know and theyl give me an early 6 or 7 wks scan so that should be the same for you too... least that way we don't have to stress waiting for the 12 wks scan... its scary ttc again but its only way to get a beautiful healthy baby so it will all be worth it one day soon fingers crossed x

Thanks ladies for your replies. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this.

I have an appointment with GP next Wednesday.. At least then i'll know about my folate levels etc... if its safe to start ttc again. I decided after the ectopic not to go back on the pill or anything, having been on different contraception for almost 10 years and constant irreguglar bleeding i thought it was a good idea to give my body a good rest, and now i have a regular cycle again so when i do drop on, at least ill have a better idea of dates. My other half cant wait to start trying again, i think mainly becasue he hates condoms and they cost a fortune

So i've seen the GP this morning, he has taken my bloods to check folate levels and in the meantime take over counter dose of folic acid. Still a waiting game though as he has also referred me for a scan to see what is going on down there. Hopefully not too long before the appt comes through ad fingers crossed all OK to start ttc again.

So many similar stories that I had to post, too. I had a miscarriage last September, and then an ectopic in February. I had one month since the surgery that I had pain in my right side (the side my tube was removed with the ectopic) right around ovulation. I haven't felt anything the other months, and had never noticed any pain before the ectopic.

So everything is all good to go. Blood levels were fine and have been taking folic acid. U/S Scan results through and had GP consultation today. All looks good. Pain could be one of two things, something called Mittleshmerz which is basically ovulation pain.. or even my bowel. Anyway.. time to start trying again! :) Excited but a bit scared at the same time!

I know this is an old post but I wanted to tell my experience. I had an ectopic in October of 2013. I had no idea I was even pregnant until I went to the hospital for not feeling right. I was super dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out and had pain on my left side. It took a couple of weeks to finally confirm the ectopic through emergency surgery. It was attached to my bladder so I was given the shot. It is now 3 years later and I still get ovulation pain. I got pregnant exactly a year after the ectopic and had a healthy little girl. I just recently miscarried and am now pregnant again immediately after. For me the pain never went away...some months it is worse than others but I at least know now when I ovulate. Just to reassure everyone you can have a healthy pregnancy afterwards even with pain from ovulation.

I have been wondering about this too with pain in general on my right side where I had my tube removed. It was on the verge of bursting when the surgery was done, now I have a stinging sensation on the right as well as occasional general pain under where one of the incisions are. To make matters worse I was pressured to get birth control and thought from what I heard, the Mirena IUD was the best way to go about birth control...I was very naive, and the doctors who put it in said it was just fine and tried to get me to put it in only two months after my surgery, but I waited three. It was extremely painful, especially after intercourse back when I was still sexually active and I would bleed. A little over a year ago I had a terrible UTI that indicated red and white blood cells. I had a body scan done, and they saw fluid in my pelvis on the right side. I got rid of the UTI and went to a gynecologist to get my IUD removed since it is now more trouble than helpful especially since I have been celibate for the past 3 years. He said that having fluid remain in the tube after having it removed was normal. Sometimes I think it's the fluid that causes the stinging. My gynecologist also told me that he was surprised that the doctors even put the IUD in knowing that I had history of an ectopic pregnancy. It's an old wound that caused trauma on the body, based on my experience with it, my body still has left over trauma from it just like any old injury. It just makes sense. Also around ovulating time like you were initially talking about, is when it is typically more painful, as well as on my period now that I get my period again since I had the Mirena removed last year.

Since writing this post i have since had a miscarriage and another ectopic pregnancy, on the same side (left) as the first. This was only back in October and resulted in the tube being removed. Since having the tube removed i have had none of the pains that i was experiencing back when i wrote the post. Them pains never went away and only got worse when i was pregnant each time. I am now putting this pain down to something being wrong with the left tube and now hopefully that has gone, I should be ok. The photographs taken from the laparoscopy are showing my right tube, ovaries and womb to be looking healthy. I have since been referred to a gynaecology specialist and am awaiting blood test results which they are checking clotting. But the Dr says (where she pulls this figure from i don't know) she thinks there is an 80% chance of successful pregnancy the next time. Almost ready to TTC again now, i can only pray the next time i get a sticky bean, i absolutely do not think i can cope with a 5th loss! xx
