Sonohysterogram after ectopic

Post by mel45 »

My RE wants to do a sonohysterogram this friday to check the patency of my tube after having an ectopic pregnancy that was diagnosed in April. I was "treated" with expectant management and my HCG levels finally dropped to 0 around May 15th. I have had two period like bleeds since then. However during the last few days of this period I have had some minor pain/discomfort on my left side similar to where I felt the ectopic previously. I feel like it is too early to check my tubal patency as I feel like it will be blocked and the procedure itself will likely cause significant pain as I still feel something there. This test will likely determine if IVF is what we need to try moving forward which I rally don't want to have to do. I just wanted to know if anyone had a sonohysterogram after their ectopic and when they had it? Can I ask my doctor to postpone until next cycle?

Dear mel45,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Experiencing some pain after an ectopic pregnancy is normal as your body has been through a great deal over the last few months. The pain may be due to adhesions (scar tissue that binds two parts of the body together) which form and take some time to settle. Your body may be preparing to ovulate and many women experience ovulation pain when they did not before their ectopic pregnancy - including myself. You also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through.

Regarding further investigations, I can only comment on UK practices as we are a UK charity, sadly, there are no tests or investigations that can be done to assure you that you will not experience an ectopic pregnancy again. Ectopic pregnancy occurs because of some underlying damage to a fallopian tube and the cause of this damage may never be established. Doctors usually suggest a period of trying to conceive before suggesting any tests or investigations. The EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive (and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months). This is because doctors would not want to introduce the risk of infection through invasive tests and also.
It maybe of some comfort to know that overall, 65% of women are healthily pregnant within 18 months of an ectopic pregnancy. Some studies suggest this figure rises to around 85% over two years.

Sadly, it is not possible to stop an ectopic pregnancy from happening. Importantly, help is available with future pregnancies with an early scan at around six weeks gestation to check that the embryo is in the right place. We are here too for emotional support, as and when you need us.

Sending much love,
Karen x
