Intermittent bleeding 8 weeks post surgery.

Post by TypicalRache »

Hello. Might as well get straight to the point. My husband and I discovered back in April that we were expecting. It was a planned pregnancy, so we were both so happy. However, I started to have intermittent bleeding and cramps in May so we decided to go see the doctor. Unfortunately they wouldn't have anything to do with us and fobbed us off and told us to wait until we were 8 weeks pregnant and go see the midwife. The bleeding got progressively worse so I admitted myself to the EPU. They performed an internal scan but couldn't see anything so they decided to do some blood work to monitor hCG levels. The results came back positive for pregnancy and we were invited back for a secondary scan 3 days later.
On the 21 May 2017 we discovered that the pregnancy was indeed ectopic and I required surgery to remove the pregnancy. 2 hours later I was in surgery. Worst day of my life.
I lost my right Fallopian tube during the surgery as it was badly damaged but luckily still intacted.
I had the 'normal' bleeding post surgery which was painful but expected.
I believe I had my first period (post ectopic) on the 24 June 2017. After 4 days it was over. Which is pretty much normal for me. I was 5 days free of bleeding when it came back intermittently for around a week. After this episode, no bleeding for a week so I decide a quick trip to the nurse for a swab to make sure there were no infections etc going on. Result came back clear - which was fantastic to hear then today 17 July 2017, it's back again, intermittent bleeding. I don't understand what's happening. I am so frustrated and upset wit this and no medical professional that I have seen can explain what is going on.
My husband and I want to start trying again sonner rather than later.
Does anyone have any experience with this or any advice??

Dear TypicalRache,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and of your continued bleeding problems.
Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your symptoms, however I can provide general advice.
It is good that you have sought medical advice and I am glad to hear your swabs are negative. I presume that as you have been to the GP, you are up to date with cervical cytology (smears) if you are aged 25 or over in the UK. If not, please return to your GP to enquire about this.
Your periods can take a while to get back to a rhythm that is more usual for you. I also found that my periods changed for a few months after my losses and experienced random bleeds. This did settle and I understand how frustrating and upsetting it is.

As a gentle reminder, we and many medical professionals advise waiting at least two menstrual cycles before trying to conceive again. This "wait" is to allow your cycles to resume and have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - important information for checking for ectopic pregnancy in the future. It also allows time for your emotions to surface and be worked through after your ordeal.

I am sorry I cannot give you definitive answers, I would suggest keeping a diary and returning to your GP if it doesn't settle.

Sending much love,
Karen x
