Really bad menstrual pain since ectopic

Post by Emoy »

Hello,

I had an ectopic pregnancy 7 months ago. I have 3 children already and this pregnancy was not planned but the ectopic was still so emotionally draining for my husband and I as we had gotten excited for baby number 4 and it was my 3rd pregnancy loss so very difficult!
We have decided not to have any more children due to the risk of another ectopic and my husband is going to have a tubal ligation.
Since my salpingectomy, i have had truly terrible menstrual pain a few days before and into my period every month. I never had menstrual pain before this and am wondering if that is normal or should I book an appointment with my GP? To be honest, i don’t really want to revisit everything but my husband is worried!!
Thank you for your help

Dear Emoy,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and losses.
It can be quite common for our periods to take a while to get back to normal following ectopic pregnancy.

The pain may be due to adhesions (scar tissue that binds two parts of the body together) which form and take some time to settle or you also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through. If the pain persists, I suggest keeping a pain diary noting when the pain appears, the intensity on a scale of 0-10 and anything that helps the pain eg resting, hot water bottle, paracetamol etc. Visiting your doctors with this information helps them to assess how best to manage your symptoms.

Sending much love,
Karen x
