Continuous bleeding after surgery for ectopic pregnancy

Post by Rebel06 »

Hi all,

I went through a laparoscopic surgery 4 weeks ago for an ectopic pregnancy where they removed my left fallopian tube. I was almost 6 weeks at that time. I started bleeding 3 days after my surgery and whilst initially it was heavy, it became quite light after 2 weeks to the extent that I didn't need any sanitary napkin. But now after 4 weeks, the bleeding hasn't stopped and today I actually needed a sanitary napkin again (although not heavy, it's continuous). Is this normal? Or am I having my periods? I'm so confused about my body after this surgery.
Also, I have gained an abnormal amount of weight after my surgery - almost 8 lbs in 4 weeks. Again, is this normal?

I would appreciate if anyone can share their experiences of how their bodies have changed after their surgery and how long it took for their menstruation cycle to get back to normal. Thank you.

Hi Rebel06,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've suffered an ectopic pregnancy and loss. It is very normal to experience changes to our bodies following these pregnancies and additionally, after surgery. Typically, there is bleeding which occurs directly after the surgery, which is not the period. Some women find that bleeding and spotting after treatment for ectopic pregnancy can last up to six weeks.

It is also possible that your period is restarting. Many women experience changes to their menstrual cycles after an ectopic pregnancy and it can take some time to settle back into a rhythm that is more usual for you. Periods can be heavier or lighter or more painful than before - as we are so individual there isn't necessarily a set pattern. Doctors consider menstrual cycles of between 23-42 days to be within normal parameters and, if you find that you are not within these sorts of timeframes, it would be a good idea to speak to your doctors just to be on the safe side.

I can not comment particularly on weight gain, as I'm not medically qualified. If you have immediate concerns you can always speak with your doctor sooner for peace of mind.

With good wishes,

Michele
