Bleeding after ruptured ectopic surgery

Post by Linzi88 »

Hi, I am new to this forum and would appreciate any advice that you can give. I am concerned about the length of time I have been bleeding for. I had surgery to remove the pregnancy and my right Fallopian tube after it ruptured, on the 15th July. I started bleeding on the 21st of July and am still bleeding now. Sorry to be graphic but it is stringy blood and the roughly the same amount everyday, it doesn’t seem to be lessening at all. When researching post ectopic op bleeding most things say roughly two weeks of bleeding is normal but maybe spotting up to 6 weeks. Should I be worried about the stringy bleeding that I am having that has been happening for three weeks or is this normal? Thank you in advance for any advice given.

Dear Linzi88,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
It is not unusual for women to bleed after treatment for ectopic pregnancy. This first bleed after treatment is a response to falling hormone levels and involves shedding of the uterine lining and is not classed as a period. The length of the bleeding can vary from woman to woman and some women do report spotting and bleeding for up to around six weeks after an ectopic pregnancy.
While this is usually nothing to worry about, if you find that the bleeding increases so that you are soaking more than a pad in an hour or have offensive smelling discharge or body temperature of more than 37°C, please do get medical attention. If you are concerned, do speak to your GP.

Sending much love,
Karen x
