What where the first signs of your period after an ectopic

Post by Smay88 »

Hi,
It is about 4 1/2 weeks since I had surgery to remove my ectopic pregnancy and my right tube.

For the past week or so I have been experiencing PMS symptoms (cramps, sore breasts, mood swings, headaches) but nothing is coming.

I'm getting a bit fed up waiting to be honest as after a chemical pregnancy in August, two crazy cycles & an ectopic in Nov I just want to feel "normal".

I have taken a pregnancy test, which was negative (thank goodness at this point).

Did anyone have longer PMS symptoms before their first period came ?

Dear Smay88,
Apologies as my ectopic pregnancy was 9 years ago so some details are now difficult to remember.

Generally speaking, your periods can take a while to re-establish - they can re-start anything between two and ten weeks after surgery and most women find that their period arrives sometime around week six or seven after surgery.
The first period may be more painful or less so than usual, heavier or lighter, last for longer or shorter than usual – there really is no set pattern. You should be able to manage the discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief and should not be soaking a pad in less than an hour. If this is not the case, you should seek medical attention

I thought I'd mention that before having a period you have to ovulate and it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first, if you are not using contraception. We and many doctors advise waiting at least two menstrual cycles before trying to conceive to allow time for your body to heal and emotions to surface. We have more information on contraception here:

Sending much love,
Karen x

Hello!
I had my left tube removed following a hecteroptic pregnancy. I had a week before miscarried also.

Mine surprisingly came 4 days after surgery and lasted for a normal length. It was less painful than usual but could be because I had just had surgery so that pain over took.

Wishing you well x
