Tube still blocked after expectant management

Post by Ellie1991 »

I had an left ectopic pregnancy on 10th January, which cleared by expectant management and was discharged from EPU after a week and a half as my hormone levels dropped to 14.

I requested a follow up scan by my GP as I was still experiencing pain on my left side which I had last week. The results came back that my tube is still blocked and that it could be hydrosalpinx but they did not confirm this. I have received no clarity from my GP on what to do going forward other than it’s fine to continue trying for another baby although I am now at a high risk of a second ectopic - this just seems like really vague information, I have so many questions, like if this will affect my future fertility, if the blockage will pass on it’s own or if it will pass at all, if there’s anything wrong with my other tube etc.

I feel really down since I’ve had my scan as I thought everything was okay once my HCG levels dropped but now they’ve told me my tube is still blocked but not given me any advice on if treatment or surgery is necessary.

Has anyone else gone through this process? Xx

Dear Ellie1991,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
The blockage you refer to can take weeks and sometimes months to be reabsorbed. I am afraid it can be difficult to be precise because our bodies are all unique and we respond differently physiologically with what is happening. In some instances, the fallopian tube may remain blocked by the pregnancy tissue which can take some time to shrink and, occasionally, it may not shrink and will leave a blockage in the tube by way of a small cyst, which maybe why they have termed it a hydrosalpinx.
If you are concerned, I would advise speaking to your GP about referral to a fertility specialist who maybe able to order further investigations and answer your questions more thoroughly.
Sending much love,
Karen x
