Exploratory lap after 2 ectopics?

Post by meemamia »

Hi - this is my first post here! I'm actually in the US but I have found this to be one of the best resources on ectopics so I hope it is okay for me to post. I had one ectopic in Oct. 2019 treated with expectant management, one this April treated with methotrexate, a chemical pregnancy in between the two. that may or may not have been an ectopic (it ended before I ever saw a doctor). After my first ectopic they did the dye test and my tubes were clear. I do, however, have 3 small fibroids, one of which is pushing into the cavity of my uterus.

My HCG just made it back down to zero. As a follow up, my fertility specialist wants to do a hysteroscopy for the fibroids plus an exploratory laparoscopy to get what she says is "the best look" at my tubes. My old fertility specialist says she would just do another HSG first, but she is in general very anti-surgery - she recommended I get methotrexate for my ectopic even though I had internal bleeding. Both my new specialist as well as another ob-gyn I spoke to at the hospital said they found it odd that I was not recommended for surgery.

I have never had a surgery in my life so I am very nervous. Has anyone else done exploratory surgery or have any advice?

Dear meemamia,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses. To experience one loss is difficult to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.
Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your queries.
I was due to have an exploratory procedure for ongoing pain following my ectopic pregnancy, however I fell pregnant just before I was due to be admitted to hospital.
We have more information on testing here- https://ectopic.org.uk/patients/trying-to-conceive/
I would advise speaking to your fertility specialist about the pros and cons of any planned investigations and then you can decide if this is the best path for you.

Sending much love,
Karen x
