3 days post tube removal

Post by alisha246 »

Hi. I found out my pregnancy was ectopic on Saturday when I was 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I had absolutely no symptoms and went for an early scan just to see my baby’s heartbeat. I consider myself very very lucky to feel like going for the scan as the ectopic pregnancy could be detected and immediate action could be taken I.e. removal of my right tube because my hormones were too high and it was the best option. I am home, took time off work and resting. I have my ups and downs... I have a slight pain on one of my stitches but I am recovering well. My doc said the other tube looked fine and that I should not have a problem conceiving again. I am terrified and sad and scared really. I am worried if I would face this again. I am 29 and my hair and is 33. We got pregnant on our first try and was thrilled about that and was also our first pregnancy. I am so lost sometimes as I want to become pregnant preferably naturally so that I do not have to go through an IVF (I would ofcourse go for if I have no choice). Despite of the doc saying my other tube is fine, I am worried If I will have to go though another surgery. I do have to take early scans from next pregnancy onwards but still it is really scaring me. I want assurance. Or something. Is it highly likely to get pregnant again? And without an ectopic? Any experiences that has been positive? When is it recommended to start trying again. I was told I can start after my first cycle if I am emotionally ready as well 😞

Alisha246,

I am so very sorry to hear that you have suffered this ectopic pregnancy and loss. Your loss is so recent that I cannot emphasize enough to take these next days, weeks, and even months easy. What you have experienced is considered both a physical and emotional trauma and recovery is not always straightforward. There is no set pathway for how we heal from these events, and I encourage you to take it at your own pace.

It’s very normal to have worries about trying to conceive. Many feel that way; I did and still struggle with it. With future pregnancies, it is possible to have early scans to ensure you have the right help in the beginning. It may provide some comfort to know that it is usually possible to conceive successfully after having an ectopic pregnancy, though the time it generally takes varies considerably from couple to couple. Approximately 65 percent of women are healthily pregnant within 18 months of ectopic pregnancy and some studies show this rises to around 85 percent after two years.

On your fertility, the egg from the tubeless side can be picked up by the other Fallopian tube, and that means that fertility is not halved with having a Fallopian tube removed. Conservative estimates suggest that an egg produced on the tubeless side manages to descend the remaining tube around 15 to 20% of the time. This means that rather than your fertility being halved it has been affected by around 30% or, looking at it another way, it means we have around a 70% opportunity of conception with each menstrual (period) cycle.

The Trust advises couples to wait at least two full menstrual cycles or three months before trying to conceive again. This is to allow time for your body to heal and emotions to surface and be worked through. However, you can start taking folic acid now. It is recommended to take folic acid for at least 12 weeks prior to conception. In the UK, the repeat occurrence of an EP is about 10 percent chance, but looking at it another way, there is a 90 percent chance of embryo being in the right place.

We understand how nerve-wracking this all can be. These Boards are a safe space, and we here for as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
I've know had 2 ectopic pregnancies. My first was treated successfully with methotrexate. I went on to have a healthy pregnancy afterwards with no issues at all. Once you get a positive rest contact your EPU and they'll book you in for an early scan. I'm not going to lie I was a nervous wreak and kept convincing myself I had one sided pain etc but it was all OK. Good luck xx
