Ectopic pregnancy

Post by Britmarieward »

November 4th I was around 4 or 5 weeks pregnant. (I think.) I get to work and start bleeding. Go to the ER. My hcg levels (they NEVER mentioned) were almost 20,000. The ultrasound tech mistakened a pseudo sac for a gestational sac. They send me home with a miscarriage. I go back 6 days later (I've had miscarriage before. Even though they didn't say, I knew my levels needed checked, even though I didn't know what they were the first time, and I didn't have insurance yet.) So November 10'th. Again, they don't mention my levels have now gone up over 40,000! They diagnose me with a miscarriage and send me home. Fast forward to January 5'th. After being sick since December 26'th and not getting better (ruling out Covid and kidney infection), the hospital once again, sends me home. This time, with a "pelvic mass" and miscarriage. He mentioned my levels this time. 189. Said get a follow up. I find my own OB. She was in complete shock when I went to see her on January 8'th. She said, "you're going to surgery today." It was over 6cm! Thankfully they were able to save my life and only take the left fallopian tube. I'm sick at the negligence of the other doctors. Their rookie mistake (3 times) could have cost me my life. I thank God for watching over me. Or whoever was for 2+ months🙏🏼

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry for everything you have been through and the missed diagnoses. I'm glad that you are recovering now. Sending you love and best wishes from the UK (from your terminology i guess you are in the US?)

Dear Britmarieward,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss. You have been through a huge amount in such a short space of time and it is very normal to feel overwhelmed. From your words, I can imagine how frightening the experience must have been and I am sorry you have had to go though this.

We are a UK based charity so it is difficult to advise about US policy and procedures but if you are upset and concerned about the level of care you received, is there anyone in the hospital you can discuss this with?

Here is some general information about recovery from surgery,
Your body needs time to heal from your surgery which is in itself a gruelling task. You have also had to process the loss of your baby and been through an immense rollercoaster of emotions - all of this will take time to come to terms with.

You should take it very easily for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time and please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others, one day you maybe ok and the next you maybe in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for however long you need. It is important to listen to your body's signals and pain and feeling tired are your body's signs to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and resting. Once your wounds have healed, very gentle exercise such as a short walk can help, but please do take this slowly.

Above all, be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.
These boards are a safe space to share, ask questions, or to vent. They are filled with people who have been through similar experiences and journeys, and we are here for you for as long as you need.

Sending much love,
Karen x
