Hcg levels after 2nd Mtx dose

Post by Krissymcg »

Hi,

I wondered if anyone is willing or able to share what their hcg levels looked like after their 2nd dose of mtx? I’m 3 weeks post the second dose and feeling a little deflated at how slowly it seems to be happening. Last week they went from 177 - 88 which was amazing. This week they have only dropped to 72 in seven days. I am so desperate for this to be over so I can start taking folic acid and try again. I feel so stuck and unable to look forward and the longer it goes on the lower I feel. I wondered how long it had taken others after the second dose to reach 0 level? Thanks so much

Dear Krissy,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
I am afraid it is difficult to predict how long it will take for your hormone levels reach non-pregnant levels. As we are all individual, our bodies respond differently to the drug and it depends on factors like how high levels reached and our unique physiology. What I can say is that it can take a number of weeks and, while it can take some time, it is not as invasive a procedure as surgery. It is also encouraging that your levels are falling steadily although I appreciate that it can be a drawn out process. Also, in terms of chances of future successful pregnancies, studies do not show a significant difference between treatment routes, whether surgical, medical using methotrexate or expectant management (allowing time for the body to resolve the pregnancy itself).
Above all be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Hello, so sorry you're going through this - it's a really tough time.

I had two doses of methotrexate too back in October, and my levels peaked at 1300. The following week they dropped to 1052, was then given a second dose. They then fell:
First week - 329
Second week - 129
Third week - 62
Fourth week - 32
Fifth week - negative pregnancy test (so under 25) and they stopped monitoring me after that. I was advised to wait for a month or til my next period, then start taking folic acid. I seem to remember them saying under 100 levels fall slowly - I hope you get through it soon, and take care of yourself x

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I only had the one dose back in August last year, but it did take a while for me to reach zero. The lower the number the slower it took to drop. My level progression from 4th August to 19th October (8 weeks and 1 day) was:
40 -> 38 -> 658 -> 1236 -> 1700 (Got MTX shot at this level) -> 2100 -> 1536 -> 298 -> 65 -> 19 -> 13 -> 14 -> 8 -> 1

It is different for everyone. I have read stories here of levels that were higher than mine but didn't take a long to clear. I know the feeling of it taking a long time to drop, it can be very frustrating. You will get there and be able to begin you journey again. Best of luck <3
