Are Antibiotics not necessary for Laparoscopic Ectopic pregnancy and fallopian tube removal?

Post by Sabeeka »

Hi I just had right fallopian tube removed yesterday due to suspected ectopic pregnancy through laparoscopic surgery. I was just wondering if they gave antibiotics in some way ? I didnt ask doctor she was v busy in a public hospital and I forgot to ask pharmacist there too. The prescription i got followed by procedure is of panadol, a pain killer and laxative. one contraceptive pill. so I am confused and worried how come external materials and elements penetrate yr body and get things out and no infection control measures are taken?

Really good question. I asked myself the same thing when I had my surgery.
I do not know the answer . I am just posting to add about the pain I had in my legs. I read that is really dangerous to have a thrombosis after this kind of surgery . Something nobody told me about. So I tried to be active doing short walks even with the pains of the surgery. I think it made the diference or smth bad could had happened again.
Keep positive . My thought is:
- Even if there is 1% of chance , still hope.
All the best .

Hi I just had a ectopic pregnancy removed plus left tube, also they did some 'clearing up' to the right tube. I asked what I'd had and if I'd have antibiotics and they said the surgeon didn't think I'd need it. I suppose if you have a ruptured tube there might be more need but if it's done key hole and is straight forward it shouldn't be necessary as it's all done in a sterile environment of course. I hope you have a good recovery x

Dear Sabeeka,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
In the UK, it is not common to have antibiotics post surgery for ectopic pregnancy. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infection and so unless there is evidence of infection, they will not be needed. Don't forget surgery is completed as sterile a procedure, so it reduces the risk of infection.
However if you find that you have an increased body temperature of more than 37°C or offensive smelling discharge or the wound site starts oozing or feels hot to touch, please do get medical attention as soon as possible as these can be signs of infection.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Hi, I had a laparoscopy without tube removal two weeks and one week ago (twice, as it was persistant ectopic pregnancy). In a country Im in (EU), when they do laparoscopic surgery, they inject antibiotics via catheter during the surgery into your vein as a precaution to minimize risk of infection. Im not sure if its same in the UK but seems perhaps like a routine practice. Thats why after surgery no antibiotic is given if no signs of infection, as it already was injected during the surgery.
