No bleeding after surgery

Post by becky-b »

Hi all,

I had surgery with right tube removal 10 days ago when I was 7 weeks pregnant. It has been a hard journey - I had to go to a&e 3 times over 3 weeks before they finally scanned me and suddenly it was an emergency as my tube ruptured. They thought it was a normal miscarriage and kept telling me to go home because it was too early in the pregnancy to do anything. I'm upset about being dismissed by medical professionals for weeks and I also worry about the future and getting pregnant again. They said my other tube was healthy.

I was light bleeding for 2 weeks before the surgery and it actually stopped the day before I had surgery. I have not had any bleeding after the surgery - is this normal? I also had egg cervical mucus a few days ago (ovulation?) and today one of my nipples have leaked. Just confused now with what's going on with my body.

@becky-b

I didn't rupture with my ectopic but was showing signs of it happening soon and in the space of 3 days between blood tests I'd gone up from 1039 hcg to over 3500. I was almost 6 weeks pregnant. It was 11 days after surgery when I started to bleed and exactly 6 weeks from the day of surgery when I had my period. Maybe your bleed will start soon.

Thanks @NovemberRain. Still no bleeding today but hopefully it will come soon. It's hard to still feel like I'm pregnant after everything that's happened x

Dear becky,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and of the difficult time you had. If you have concerns over your care and would like some answers, I would advise speaking to the Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS) within your local hospital who will review this for you.

Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your queries. The bleeding you experience during the ectopic pregnancy is due to the drop in hCG levels and is not classed as a period. We all experience differing levels of bleeding and this may have been normal for you.

Your periods can take a while to re-establish and they can re-start anything between two and ten weeks after treatment. Most women find that their period arrives sometime around week six or seven after surgery.
The body is a very clever thing and before you can have a period you have to ovulate. It is perfectly possible to ovulate within 14 days after surgical treatment and almost as soon with Methotrexate treatment, so it is important to be aware that it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first if you are not using some form of contraception.

I would always advise ladies seeking medical advice about any change in their breasts and nipples, speaking to a doctor about your bleeding may also put your mind at rest too.

Sending much love,
Karen x

Thanks Karen, it is a relief to hear that the bleeding I had during my ectopic pregnancy could be the bleed that other women get after surgery. Thank you ❤️

Hi Becky,
I also had egg white discharge about ten days post-op and didn’t have any bleeding following my surgery until my next period which, for me, was 21 days later. The surgeon did say that they removed over a liter and a half of blood from my abdomen so I just assumed they cleared most of it for me.

Thanks for letting me know @Tiffa_D. And so sorry to hear what you went through. I'm over two weeks post op now and still no bleeding so it must be the same for me.
