Two ectopic pregnancies, what to do next

Post by Scrubsfan103 »

Hello,

I had an ectopic pregancy last August in my left tube and had a second ectopic in March in my right tube. Both times were successfully treated with Methotrexate so I still have both tubes. After my first ectopic, I had a Sono-HSG and both tubes were deemed clear.

I had an appointment with a fertility specialist two weeks ago. She recommended that I have another Sono HSG done to check my tubes but lamented that this test won't guarantee that another ectopic wont happen. At this time, she doesnt recommend an exploratory laparoscopy but may do so later.

There is unfortunately no test than can guarantee you wont have another ectopic and she said that she has seen patients who had positive exploratory laparoscopies and still went on to have ectopics. She said that, even if the Sono says that my tubes are clear, based on my history she would still recommend IVF as she wouldn't want me to try naturally and have a 3rd ectopic.

Ultimately she said the decision would be mine whether I want to take a chance and try naturally or go with IVF. She did say ectopics can happen with IVF and though they can try and place the embryo far from the tubes it could still get suctioned back into the tubes. She mentioned that I could also have tubal occlussion surgery which in essence is tying my tubes. I would only do this as a last resort since its so permanent.

Right now, I am waiting for my period to do the HSG and go from there. My husband and I are contemplating trying again naturally once more before we decide to start IVF seeing as how IVF is so expensive. I live in Ontario where they offer one cycle funded IVF but there is a two year waitlist at my clinic and I only got on the list in January so I would still need to wait another 18 months which seems way too far away. So I am torn on whether to wait a year and a half for the funded IVF, try again naturally once more or take out a loan to help pay for IVF now.

Does anyone have any guidance or advice? Any success stories after having two or more ectopics?

Hi Nicole,

Really sorry to hear about your ectopic pregnancies. Unfortunately ectopic pregnancy can still happen with IVF, I am going through one myself. So please if you have a chance for it to happen naturally, I'd say to give it one more go. I am not a trained medical professional, but before IVF i never thought it was possible to have ectopic pregnancy, only now to learn there is a risk with IVF. If you do go down the IVF route, maybe try frozen transfer instead of fresh ones, as your body will have time to heal from all the stim medications and egg collection surgery. My thoughts are with you.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for your response. I am leaning towards trying one more time naturally but just worry about having a third ectopic. Only way to prevent another tubal ectopic would be to remove or tie my tubes and do IVF but that measure seems way too drastic and permanent.

I am trying to stay positive and want to give it one last try before going IVF route. Hope that's the right decision. Still gonna think on it some more.
