Cramping after Ectopic surgery

Post by Hei51 »

Hi everyone. I had ectopic surgery done on Friday (3 days ago) which included removing my right Fallopian tube. I expected some pain but today my pain is really intense cramping which comes and goes. Almost like the cramping I was experiencing before my surgery when I was first having symptoms. In fact it is probably more intense now. I stopped my codeine last night as it was making me constipated. I managed to have some bowel movement this morning so have taken some more codeine to help with pain. Is the cramping normal?

Dear Hei51,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Pain and discomfort following treatment for ectopic pregnancy is normal. The discomfort should reduce over the next few weeks and I would suggest taking the pain relief that has been prescribed for you as directed by your doctors. If the codeine is causing problems with side effects such as the constipation, please speak to your GP who maybe able to offer you an alternative or discuss a different dose.

Having said this is all normal, if you find that you have an increased body temperature of more than 37°C or offensive smelling discharge or the wound site starts oozing or feels hot to touch, or the pain is not settling with your pain relief or is worsening, please do get medical attention as soon as possible as these can be signs of infection.
We have more information on what to expect regarding pain levels on our website and I have copied the link here-

Above all be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.
Sending much love,
Karen x
