Anyone else in the UK still waiting for a fertility referral?

Post by Esb27 »

Totally not complaining here, I get that COVID has put the NHS under huge amounts of strain (and we’re luckily enough to have that as it is) so things are massively delayed. But just wondering how long people have waited to speak to a fertility specialist? (UK only plz)

My doctor referred me on 22nd April, I had a call from them asking if I’ve left the country recently a week after that (lol) and they said then that someone would be in contact within 4 weeks. I called last week to see what was happening but they said it might be a few more weeks as they are busy. Obvs I’m sure it will be any day now but the frustrating thing is that won’t be my actual appointment, this is just for them to contact me to schedule in an appointment and/or tests. Probs won’t actually speak to a specialist until September.

Has anyone had a similar experience this side of the pandemic?

If I went private would it be insane amounts of money?

Thanks :)

I was diagnosed 24th of March, and I think my referral was sent by the GP at the start of April. My first appointment was a video call where they went through both of our histories. Then, about two weeks later we attended the clinic where we did height and weight for us both and I had an ultrasound to check my ovaries and womb, and blood tests. Then, df handed a sample in earlier this week.
They said they will post an appointment out within a month of df handing in his sample.

I’ve still not met an actual consultant, or had any answers. That’s the next step.

You need to have been trying to conceive for at least one year, by the way.

Hi Calliepup,

Oh that’s good you’ve managed to get that far so quickly! Good luck with the rest of it.

Yeah we’ve been trying for about 2 years. 2 ectopics and 2 miscarriages later and we thought [censored word] okay something is amiss here.

I have waited 6 months and finally have an appointment through in July. This was after contacting pals though and think I would have waited longer if I hadn’t complained.

Hi Amx,

That’s really useful thank you! I’m going to give it until the end of the week as that’s the additional 2 weeks she told me the call might come but if I don’t hear anything by Monday I’ll call again.

Thanks!

I’ve also had two ectopics and three miscarriages, although I did have my dd in the middle of it all. We have been trying for a year now.
My consultant appointment is in about a month; so that’s about 3 months out from the initial referral.
Your GP might be able to do some tests. Be prepared for a lot of blood tests!
