Chances of Ectopic with IVF

Post by Scrubsfan103 »

Hi all,

I have had two ectopic pregnancies in the past year, one in each tube. Both times, it was successfully treated with Methotrexate so I still have both tubes.

I recently did a Sono-HSG and it showed that my right tube appeared blocked but the left seemed open.

I was gearing up to start trying naturally one more time but then my fertility clinic advised me last week that a spot for funded IVF opened up for July. I have decided to proceed with this as the cost for most things (exception medications and storage) will be covered.

I know that there is still a possibility of having an ectopic pregancy with IVF. Does anyone have any success stories with IVF after ectopics?

Dear Nicole,
I am so sorry to hear that you have suffered multiple ectopic pregnancies. Experiencing one ectopic pregnancy is difficult, dealing with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.
It is natural to be worried after everything you have been through. Sadly even with IVF there is the risk of ectopic pregnancy and as you have suffered the condition twice there is sadly an increased risk. However it is important to remember that help is available and your doctors should book you in for an early scan at around six weeks to check that the embryo is in the right place. I am not sure where you are located but if you are in the UK you can also contact your local Early Pregnancy Unit direct and self refer for an early scan. This can also give you peace of mind that you have the care available should you need some reassurance.
Sadly I do not have statistics but have added some information from the NHS site here-

Sending much love and positive thoughts,
Karen x

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your response.

I am in Canada. My fertility clinic is aware of my history so if the IVF is successful they will be monitoring me closely.

Thanks again.

Nicole
