Bilateral Salpingectomy after 2nd IVF Ectopic Pregnancy

Post by Snoopydraws23 »

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum but hoping to seek support from individuals who may have been in a similar situation. A very brief history....struggled with infertility which was found to be due to PCOS and Stage 4 endometriosis (asymptomatic). I have had 4x rounds of IVF. My second round (May 2017) which was a frozen embryo transfer (FET) resulted in a right sided ectopic pregnancy which was medically managed with methotrexate. My fourth round (September 2020) also a FET, was a leaking right sided ectopic pregnancy which resulted in emergency surgery to completely remove my right tube. :(

I have sought advise from a private endometriosis specialist in addition to the reviews with the hospital and fertility clinic. My left tube is inflamed and I also have a haematosalpinx, its quite difficult to access and due to the endometriosis, there are adhesions involving the bowel. The private specialist has said it is "doable" to remove the tube and would advise this before another round of IVF.

My two questions really are:

Has anyone had similar surgery following a recurrent ectopic pregnancy? And has anyone had a complete bilateral salpingectomy and still had an ectopic pregnancy?

I would not risk another round without this surgery due to the challenges of accessing my left tube which could make treatment of another ectopic very difficult, however, my fertility clinic said that even with both tubes removed it would not reduce the risk of further ectopic pregnancies. :?

Dear Snoopydraws,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses. To experience one loss is difficult, to deal with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.
Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice and I would advise speaking to the medical team looking after you.
Sadly there is a risk of ectopic pregnancy still following surgery and IVF. There is unfortunately no way to guarantee that you wouldn't experience ectopic pregnancy again, but you would be under the early care of your medical team who would be able to monitor you closely right from the outset.

Sending much love,
Karen x
