2nd ectopic resulted in surgery

Post by north923 »

I had my first ectopic last December which was treated with methotrexate, my levels went down after a week and I was discharged from the EPU. We started trying again around April, in June I found out I was pregnant again.

An early scan was arranged at 6 weeks to check everything was ok. I started bleeding the day before the scan which got heavier the day of the scan. Scan confirmed no baby in my uterus but they could see something on my right near the ovary.

After a series of blood tests over the next week a 2nd ectopic pregnancy was confirmed on the same side as last time. The advice was to remove the tube, I had my surgery on Monday. The doctors said that based on looking at my other tube they couldn’t rule out another ectopic even with the right one being removed.

I am taking it day by day but still don’t know how to feel about it all, it just seems like something you see in a film or documentary. It’s hard to believe it happened at all.

I currently have a 21 month old who I still BF at night and obviously am struggling with the pain due to surgery. How long after surgery does the pain and tenderness go away?

Hi North923,

My heart goes out to all you've been through and for your losses. I have been through two ectopic pregnancies myself. Right now, the most important thing to do is to look after yourself and rest as best you can. I know that is easier said than done with a toddler at home. Your surgery is very recent and you will want to follow the guidance provided by the doctors on your recovery. The emotional recovery may take longer and we are here for you throughout that process.

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust has information regarding physical recovery. I've linked the page particular to wound recovery: https://ectopic.org.uk/physical-recover ... ound-site/. I can't emphasize enough to take these first days slowly to allow for proper healing.

I also want to remind you that there is nothing you did to cause the ectopic pregnancy, nor nothing we can do to prevent them. While there remains a risk of ectopic pregnancy with any pregnancy, there are greater chances it will not occur. Of course, I also encourage you to follow up with you GPs and have all your questions answered regarding your personal circumstance.

No matter what, we are here for you throughout.

With good wishes,
Michele
