Ectopic methotrexate struggling

Post by kayleigh1994 »

Today I had the good news my hcg is now down to 6 after just one methotrexate injection. The hospital said they don’t need me to go back only to do a test in 2 weeks to check it’s negative. Im now lost, I did ask about if I need to take any vitamins and all she said is don’t try for a while. Im so confused like do I need to take anything, do I need to wait the 12 weeks. Im sure I read it was take folic acid for 12 weeks before trying. Im just so confused. This was a planned pregnancy so I’d love to be able to get my body ready to try again. If anyone can help on what I need to take and how much that would be great

Dear Kayleigh,
I am glad to hear that your levels have finally settled.
Now that your hCG levels are down, unless you have been told otherwise by a medical professional, it is fine to start taking folic acid supplements again.
Following methotrexate, you should take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily. The Methotrexate is metabolised quickly but it can affect the quality of your cells, including those of your eggs and the quality of your blood for up to three months after it has been given. The medicine can also affect the way your liver works and so you need to give your body time to recover properly before a new pregnancy is considered. A shortage of folate could result in a greater chance of a baby having a neural tube defect such as hare lip, cleft palate, or even spina bifida or other NT defects. This is why the "wait" and then taking folic acid for 12 weeks before trying to conceive is so important.

I hope this helps,
Sending much love,
Karen x

I have picked up a pack of normal pregnancy vitamins with 400ug of folic acid in. Is this suitable?

Dear Kayleigh,
That dose is fine as the NHS website states you should take a 400 microgram supplement of folic acid every day before you get pregnant, and every day afterwards, up until you're 12 weeks pregnant.
