Post 1st Ectopic question

Post by 1st_eptopic_5100 »

I am exactly 1 week out from surgery. Up until today everything seemed fairly normal as described it should be. I went to work today (office job) I felt okay for the most part. Out of nowhere for no reason what so ever I started to tear up. Later on in the day my hand and feet got extremely cold. I left work about 30 mins early and went home. After arriving home I laid down and again started crying for no reason for about 10 minutes. Felt the urge to use the restroom and more blood came out than has the entire week when I peed accompanied by a larger sized clot. My hands and feet will not get warm and I have a headache. Is any of this normal? Thanks in advance!

Dear 1st_ectopic_5100,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
Experiencing an ectopic pregnancy is a huge ordeal and you are in the early stages of recovery. Your body needs time to heal from your surgery which is in itself a gruelling task. You have also had to process the loss of your baby and been through an immense rollercoaster of emotions - all of this will take time to come to terms with.

You should take it very easily for about six weeks after surgery. Your body will be using its energies to heal internally. It is normal to feel physically and emotionally exhausted during this time and please do be kind to yourself. Recovery can take time and some days will be better than others, one day you maybe ok and the next you maybe in discomfort or more emotional. This is perfectly usual and the healing process will go back and forth in this way for however long you need. It is important to listen to your body's signals and pain and feeling tired are your body's signs to tell you to rest. We suggest keeping a healthy balanced diet, drinking lots of water and resting. Once your wounds have healed, very gentle exercise such as a short walk can help, but please do take this slowly.

When returning to work, we normally suggest after six weeks you should be able to return to most jobs from a physical point of view, but many women need to take more time off to help them deal with the psychological (emotional) impact of the loss of their baby and the frightening experience they felt being diagnosed with and treated for an ectopic pregnancy.

Having said all of this, we would advise that if you find that you have an increased body temperature of more than 37°C or offensive smelling discharge or the wound site starts oozing or feels hot to touch, please do get medical attention as soon as possible as these can be signs of infection. Having very cold hands and feet and not being able to warm up can mean that you have a very high temperature (I know that sounds strange) and given your recent surgery, with these symptoms, I would advise seeking urgent medical help to ensure that you do not have an infection. In the UK, you can speak to your GP, or if it is out of hours, contact your local out of hour provider, either a local walk in centre or by calling NHS 111. Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, if you start to feel unwell with flu like symptoms, develop breathing difficulties, feel dizzy and unwell, your heavy bleeding continues or worsens or you are concerned about your symptoms, please visit your local A&E.
Sending much love,
Karen x
