Expectant Management - bleeding stopped then restarted

Post by ASquared »

Hello All,

I was just wondering if this was normal - I had an ectopic at 5ish weeks, my hormone levels are dropping and on about 68. I bled for a week afterwards, then had one week with no bleeding at all. However I have started bleeding again, and just wondered if this is quite standard? It's not filling a pad in an hour or anything drastic.

Any feedback much appreciated - I did look online but couldn't see anything about it.
thanks,
A

I think it is normal as long as you don’t fill a pad every hour or anything like that. When I had my first ectopic treated with methotrexate I only bled for three days with no spotting afterwards, I also skipped a whole cycle before I had my AF. The second ecptopic that was also treated with methotrexate I had bleeding for 3 weeks straight then two weeks after that I had my first cycle. Try not to stress but obviously if something just feels off and your not sure you could always try to call the doctor over the phone and voice your concerns.

Dear ASquared,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,
The first bleed that occurs after treatment for ectopic pregnancy, which you are experiencing, is not classed as a period. It is the body's response to falling hormone levels because you are sadly no longer pregnant. The body expels the lining of the uterus that had built up in preparation for the pregnancy because it is no longer needed. This process involves vaginal bleeding - it can be clotty or like one of your usual periods and some women have bleeding/spotting for up to six weeks.
I would say that your bleeding is normal however, I do have to remind you that if you experience worsening/heavy bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain or feel dizzy and unwell please seek medical advice.

We have more information on medical management of ectopic pregnancy here-

Sending much love,
