Hcg levels dramatic response

Post by kenlough95 »

Hello. I have the kyleena IUD in place and after I had extreme abdominal pain, distention and bloating I decided to take a pregnancy test and was very surprised to learn that I was pregnant. I was instructed to go the ER where they found I had an ectopic pregnancy in my left fallopian tube. I am very grateful that my body did respond to one dose of methotrexate. After reading many posts and seeing how common it is for HcG levels to increase on day 4 or just go down slightly, I was wondering if anyone else had such a dramatic response drop in HcG levels? Or, if you would be willing to share your HcG levels on each day?

My HcG levels were:
day 0: 3500
day 4: 683
day 7: 91.

I am on day 9 and am feeling much better but just suddenly feel exhausted and intense mood swings. I am thankful for this forum and I am thinking of each one of you going through this emotional and scary time.

Dear kenlough,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,
It is common for hCG levels to rise on day four as the action of methotrexate treatment is not instantaneous. It may be that your levels were starting to decrease and the methotrexate has sped it up. I'm afraid I cannot say how long it takes for levels to drop to pre pregnancy levels as it all depends upon our unique physiology and how high the levels were but it can take several weeks.
Many people are surprised by how tired they feel following methotrexate and you have also had to come to terms with finding out you were pregnant whilst on contraception, and having treatment for an emergency condition. All of this will be exhausting and take time to come to terms with.
Please don't do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise whilst your levels are dropping and report any worsening symptoms.
We have more information on methotrexate treatment on our website which I have copied here -

Sending much love,
Karen x
