Period after surgery

Post by dannimary »

Hi, just want to say thank you to the ECT for their resources. I have been treated over the past month for an ectopic pregnancy and this forum has been a huge help in getting information.

I just wondered if anyone could help me with some queries please?

I received one dose of methotrexate on 13 February and after my day 7 blood test found it wasn't working, I had surgery on 22 February to remove my right tube.

I was advised to take a pregnancy test 2 weeks after the surgery. I took one 2 days ago and it was negative. Does this mean my hcg is now 0? If so, does that mean I'm ok to start taking folic supplements? (I understand I have to wait 3 months before trying to get pregnant again as I had the injection).

I have also had some light bleeding today, for the first time since before the operation. Could this be my period? I wasn't expecting one a couple of weeks after the surgery.

Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you!

Hi Dannimari. So sorry to hear you’ve had to go through all this and sorry for your loss.

Did you have a bleed immediately after/around your surgery?

Do you know what the HCG sensitivity of the test you’ve done will be?

I don’t believe there’s any harm now in taking folic acid, but as you say just to ensure it is 3 months of taking it before you TTC again.

My message didn't post initially. I said after tge methotrexate, my hcg got to 0 that's when I ovulated and 2 weeks later I got my first period, so bleeding weeks after a hcg of 0 us likely a period

Dear dannimary,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss.
As you had surgery surgery, you are absolutely fine to start folic acid now, but as you say, take it for 12weeks before trying to conceive.
I think that as your hCG has just reached pre pregnancy levels, this bleed is due to your levels dropping, rather than a period.
I hope this helps,
Sending much love,
Karen x
