“Ectopic”

Post by Enfys »

I don’t know if I’m just being really sensitive but I’m finding it difficult when people refer to what’s happened as just “ectopic” eg “the ectopic was diagnosed…” or “ I told them you’d had an ectopic”. If they said ectopic pregnancy it would feel better I think but I feel just saying “ectopic” like it’s talking about a “thing” or some medical abnormality is belittling the loss and dehumanising of the fact I’ve lost a baby.

Dear Enfys,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,
You are not alone in feeling this way, we hear from many people (and I include myself in this) who say they feel their ectopic pregnancy and treatment was very medicalised and there was little reference to their baby loss. I am so sorry you are going through this. As a charity, the Trust are trying really hard to educate healthcare professionals not only on the early signs and symptoms for early diagnosis I ectopic pregnancy but also around language used and ensuring staff recognise the fact their patient has just experienced a life threatening emergency and it's treatment AND the loss of their baby. I truly hope we will make a change for the future.
For now, know that you are among friends here who understand and will support you through this journey.
Sending much love and warm hugs,
Karen x
